The airline aims to prevent entities from fraudulently obtaining its content and misrepresenting its products and services to the traveling public. To combat this practice, American Airlines announced in 2021 that it would be monitoring bookings for skiplagging behavior. It can also lead to operational issues with checked bags and prevent other customers from booking a seat. Curtis Blessing, a spokesman for American Airlines, stated that intentionally creating an empty seat that could have been used by another customer or team member is a detrimental outcome. However, American Airlines and other carriers prohibit hidden city ticketing in their Conditions of Carriage and agency agreements. In such cases, passengers can simply disembark in Cleveland and save money. For example, a flight from Dallas to Cleveland may be more expensive than a flight from Dallas to New York, even if the plane connects in Cleveland. Sometimes referred to as “hidden city” ticketing, skiplagging takes advantage of the fact that airlines often charge lower fares between certain destinations to stimulate demand or reposition aircraft and crew. However, this practice ultimately costs airlines money and can lead to operational issues. Skiplagging involves booking a flight with a layover and intentionally skipping the final leg of travel, either to save money on a direct flight or to obtain cheaper tickets to a specific destination.
